WPLS is not only relevant for typical application areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), but is also traditionally a component of Electronic Warfare (EW). This is the science of optimizing the use of the electromagnetic spectrum for oneself and allies while simultaneously impeding its use by adversaries. EW is categorized into Electronic Support (ES), Electronic Attack (EA), and Electronic Protection (EP). ES addresses methods to enhance spectrum utilization, EA describes attack methodologies, and EP focuses on countermeasures against these attack methods.

This knowledge base is thematically organized into these subject areas.

The research area WPLS is compelling as it develops innovative methods to enhance the security of wireless communication and prevent unauthorized access. Topics such as Cognitive Radio and Software Defined Radio enable greater flexibility and adaptability in radio systems. Traditional jamming, as well as replay or distance spoofing attacks, represent ways in which an attacker can exploit the electromagnetic spectrum to gain advantages. RF Fingerprinting leverages unique device signatures for identification, while channel-based key exchange protocols ensure secure communication through transmission channel properties. Additionally, tamper detection plays a critical role in identifying physical interventions in devices. Finally, Radio Frequency Machine Learning Systems integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning to further enhance security.
