Application and Enrollment
For the Master’s programme in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, you can enroll for both the winter and summer semesters.
Application periods
Applicants from Germany and the EU:
- Winter semester: early June until 01.09.
- Summer semester: early December until 01.03.
Applicants from non-EU countries:
- Winter semester: early June until 15.07.
- Summer semester: early December until 15.01.

Academic and content-based admission requirements
Academic and content-based admission requirements
Applicants for the Master’s programme must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology or an equivalent academic degree from a university after completing at least six semesters (three years of study, 180 ECTS).
The submitted Bachelor’s degree must include methodical and research-oriented content totaling at least 25 credits in Mathematics, at least 30 credits in Information Technology, and at least 30 credits in Electrical Engineering/Electronics. If the aforementioned admission requirements are not fully met, the examination board may impose additional coursework and examination requirements totaling up to 25 credits, as well as a deadline for completion. These can be fulfilled partially or entirely within elective courses. A provisional admission will be granted for the duration of these requirements.
Language requirements
Accepted proof of English language proficiency
All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency at least at B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at the time of enrollment, regardless of their chosen field of study. The following language certificates are accepted:
- German Abitur certificate
- UNIcert II® English: UNIcert II®
- IELTS Academic: min. 6
- TOEFL IBT (until 2026): min. 85
- TOEFL IBT (from 2026): min. 4.5
- PTE Academic: min. 55
- FCE (First Certificate in English)
- CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)
- CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
- DAAD Language Certificate (B2 result) from RUB
- Certificate of completion for the intensive course "English for International Students and Applicants (B2 – B2/C1)" at RUB
Note: Upon request, the examination board may accept an alternative comparable language certificate. In this case, please contact the academic advisory service in good time.
Accepted language certificates for German
Applicants who have not acquired their academic qualifications at a German-speaking institution and are applying for the following study focuses:
- Automation and Control Engineering
- Electric Mobility Systems
- Electronics
- Power Systems Technology
- High-Frequency Sensors and Systems
must provide proof of the required German language skills. You will find a list of language certificates accepted by RUB on the following website.

Note: If you cannot yet provide a valid German language certificate at the time of application, this can be submitted later by the time of enrollment. Until then, the status of your application will remain "incomplete". In this case, please contact the academic advisory service early.

Sign up in the RUB applicant portal
First, you must register in the RUB application portal. After registration, you will receive a confirmation email with your user ID and information about account activation. Once your account is activated, you can log in to the application portal:

Apply in the RUB Applicant Portal
In the second step, you apply for a study place in one of our specializations within the Master’s program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. You enter your data and upload your documents on time.
Notes for:
Domestic students and equivalent applicants:
You can apply either with your final bachelor’s degree documents or with a transcript of records certifying at least 150 ECTS (for a 180 ECTS bachelor) or 180 ECTS (for a 210 ECTS bachelor).
Students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at RUB:

International students:
If you cannot yet provide a valid German language certificate at the time of application, it can be submitted later by the enrollment deadline. Until then, your application status will remain “incomplete”. In this case, please contact the academic advisory service early.
Registration at RUB:
If your application meets all formal and content requirements, you will receive admission to the Master’s program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. Your admission letter will also include all information regarding any conditions, if your previous degree does not fully meet the content admission requirements.
