THz systems and their applications have been intensively researched for more than 20 years. In the process, the advantages of these nowadays still bulky non-portable THz devices could be demonstrated many times. The miniaturized THz technology therefore has the character of a leap innovation with a high potential for technology transfer and new spin-offs. The goal of the network is to further leverage this technological potential and to lead the foreseeable international wave of innovation with excellent research. Previous THz technologies are based on classical approaches, in which circuits are built discretely or in split-block technology, and reach their limits above 100 GHz. The smaller wavelengths place higher demands on manufacturing tolerances and the technologies are thus becoming more and more complex. This is where terahertz.NRW comes in, bringing university and non-university partners in the field of THz research even closer together. The rapid transfer of results from basic research into concrete applications is one of the main goals of the network.
