With five out of 15 excellent young scientists, the Ruhr-Universität Bochum once again has the most newly appointed members of the Young College of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. "The repeated success in the selection process with over 100 applications from universities and research institutions in the state speaks for the consistent promotion of young talent at the RUB in recent years," says Rector Prof. Dr. Elmar Weiler. Of the ten college members appointed from the RUB in recent years, seven now hold professorships at other universities.
Successful for the fourth time
After the selection process for 2007 (three of 13), 2008 (four of eleven) and 2009 (three of eleven), this time five top RUB scientists made the leap into the academy: Junior professor Dr. Julia Becker (Faculty of Physics and Astronomy), Dr. Simon Ebbinghaus (chemistry and biochemistry), Dr. Nils C. Gerhardt (electrical engineering and information technology), Dr. Rüdiger Graf (history) and Dr. Florian Leese (biology and biotechnology) prevailed in the nationwide application process for 2011. This is the fourth time that RUB has the most newly appointed college members. "More than 100 top-class applications indicate that the college has established itself as an important stepping stone for a professorship for the top of the next generation of academics in North Rhine-Westphalia," says Academy President Prof. Dr. Dr. Hanns Hatt (RUB).
