Colombia is the only country in Latin America where anti-personnel mines and so-called unconventional explosive and incendiary devices continue to be used regularly. Using a wide variety of explosives, these mines have a wide variety of designs and trigger mechanisms. Between 1990 and 2013, 10253 people of Colombian people fell victim to such explosive devices. In order to detect these landmines in Colombia and render them harmless, the German Research Foundation (DFG) is promoting collaboration between German and Colombian scientists. Together with their cooperation partners, the researchers from the Chairs of Electronic Circuit Technology and Microwave Systems are developing the basis for a radar-based handheld system. Parallel to the measurement methods and algorithms to be developed in Bochum, the project partner TU Ilmenau is developing the radar electronics required for the mobile detector. At the BTU Cottbus, the embedded platform for sensor fusion and mobile signal processing is being developed as part of research funding.
