FMCW radar levitates sphere

Alexander Orth uses radar to develop a controlled electromagnet.

Floating sphere - This sounds somehow like magic, but it can be realized with precisely controlled magnetic forces. Alexander Orth has taken up this challenge in his master's thesis. To determine the position, he uses a high-precision radar sensor, which he uses with an FPGA for real-time processing and digital control of the electromagnet. He was able to present the result at Germany's leading industrial applications trade fair SPS IPC Drives in November at the booth of Xilinx, the world market leader in FPGAs.
