2023 IEEE Sensors Letters Best Paper Award

Created by Marc Hamme | |   HFS

We are very happy about the IEEE Sensors Letters Best Paper Award 2023.

Simon Kueppers, Timo Jaeschke (both 2pi-Labs GmbH), Nils Pohl (Institute of Integrated Systems) and Jan Barowski (Institute of High Frequency Systems) received the 2023 IEEE Sensors Letters Best Paper Award for their paper "Versatile 126-182 GHz UWB D-Band FMCW Radar for Industrial and Scientific Applications" at the IEEE SENSORS 2023 conference in Vienna last Tuesday.

Open Access Link: Versatile 126–182 GHz UWB D-Band FMCW Radar for Industrial and Scientific Applications | IEEE Journals & Magazine | IEEE Xplore

Features of the sensor technology are:

  • FMCW radar with bandwidth of 56 GHz
  • Phase noise of better than -80 dBc/Hz (@Foff >10kHz)
  • Ramp slopes of more than 56 GHz / 1 ms
  • SNR of 81 dB
  • Calibrated range resolution of 2.7mm
  • Distance jitter of 63.7 nm at 1m distance

With these properties, the sensor technology presented is suitable for a wide range of applications in science and industry. These include, as shown in the publication, precise distance measurements with high repeatability and three-dimensional imaging processes with fine depth resolution.

A key element of the work is the cooperation between science and industry, as in this case the collaboration between 2pi-Labs GmbH and the Ruhr-University Bochum in the research project PINK and the DFG SFB MARIE, which are funded by BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and DFG (German Research Foundation). This collaboration contributed significantly to the results.

The team would like to thank the IEEE Sensors Letters for the prestigious award and looks forward to continuing its research work in the field of radar sensor technology.
