Coherent sources of THz radiation (0.1 THz – 10 THz) have become ubiquitous tools for a wide range of applications in science and technology. In particular, fast progress in the demonstration of intense, ultrafast laser driven THz sources for time-domain spectroscopy have enabled nonlinear time- resolved spectroscopies in this frequency region to bloom. However, the study of liquids, and more particularly, water, is a fascinating yet widely unexplored area with many unanswered questions. In this project, we want to explore the possibilities of high-average power, strong-field THz sources for studying the non-linear properties of water.

We are looking for a PhD candidate to work in these state-of-the art research topics in an
international research group. The candidate will be involved both in technological development of intense and high average power THz sources using state-of-the-art ultrafast laser systems, as well as in the spectroscopic investigation of water. The work will be done in close collaboration with several groups in Physical Chemistry at the RUB and the person will be actively involved in the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV (Ruhr Explores SOLVation - These topics cover both applied and fundamental aspects of ultrafast laser science and have various multi-disciplinary application fields in physics and physical chemistry. Candidates should hold a Masters’ degree (or be close to completing it) in Physics, Electrical Engineering or other related areas and ideally already have some experience in experimental laser physics and/or Terahertz technology/spectroscopy. The completion of the iGSS Training Schedule and participation in the activities of the iGSS is mandatory The PhD position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Remuneration: The PhD position will be remunerated according to the TVL-E13 100% salary standard in Electrical Engineering (approx. 50.000 Euro/year brutto).
