High-Power THz sources and applications

One of the main focuses of our chair is the research of high power THz sources. While typical laser amplifier systems have pulse rates of 1000 pulses per second or less, we are trying to provide power sources operating in the megahertz range. This enables applications like THz time domain spectroscopy or pump-probe spectroscopy to be massively accelerated. Application fields such as the investigation of biological samples or the measurement of molecular dynamics benefit enormously from this. In particular, samples in aqueous solutions have been very difficult to characterize so far, since water has an enormously high absorption index in the THz range. Our high power sources often make an efficient investigation with simultaneously high signal strength possible.
